Music

Throughout the past centuries, many well-known composers have come to the St. Thomas Church.

For example, in 1841, Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy performed the St. Matthew Passion. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart played here as well. However, it is the life and work of Johann Sebastian Bach that is inseparably connected with this place. Several of his cantatas, oratorios, and passions were performed in the St. Thomas Church for the first time.

The St. Thomas Boys Choir also owes much of its reputation to Bach. Today, the ensemble often performs at the weekly motets and often sings Bach's cantatas for Sunday services. Additionally, Bach's Christmas Oratorio as well as his Easter passions are musical highlights every year.

Today, many events and concerts keep this unique cultural heritage alive and attract visitors from around the world.

Events

The many concerts in this place carry the musical heritage of the St. Thomas Church into the present day.

The St. Thomas Boys Choir fascinates its audiences with its magnificent sound. Almost every Friday, they sing one of Bach's motets and on Saturdays, they invite you to listen to the cantatas, which are performed together with the Gewandhaus Orchestra. Finally, the Christmas Oratorio marks the highlight of the musical season in Advent.

Besides these regular events, the St. Thomas Church became famous as a place of extraordinary concerts of every kind. The church has already hosted artists such as the world-famous cellist Yo-Yo-Ma and the jazz pianist Joachim Kuhn.
